Characteristics of agro biomass

Straw and harvest residues have specific properties that require proper preparation before pelleting.

Moisture
12 – 20%
Post-harvest straw has 12–18% moisture. In winter conditions it may be higher — drying is required for moisture > 16%.

Long straw strands must be cut and ground to < 10 mm. A mill with special straw hammers is required.

Higher ash content than wood — especially wheat and rice straw. Requires a specific die and higher pressing pressures.

Straw lacks the lignin of wood — adding 2–5% starch or molasses as a binder is recommended for firm pellets.

Processing technology

Straw requires a different approach from wood — the key step is proper size reduction and optional conditioning.

Crushing straw bales

Straw bales are broken up and reduced by crushers or choppers to lengths of 20–50 mm before entry into the mill.

Fine fraction grinding

Hammer mill with densely arranged hammers grinds straw to fractions < 10 mm. Screens 6–8 mm are used for pellets.

Conditioning and blending

For harder pellets, 2–5% starch or molasses is added as a binder. Mixers homogenise the mixture before the pellet mill.

Pelleting

Pellet mill with flat or ring die compresses material into pellets. Straw requires higher pressures than wood.

Cooling and sieving

Pellets are cooled and screened on the vibro-sieve. Fine dust is returned to the cycle, finished pellets go to packaging.
