Wood and Sawdust

Processing wood residues, sawdust and chips into high-quality wood pellets and briquettes — the cleanest biomass fuel.

Characteristics of wood raw material

The quality of the final pellet depends directly on raw material preparation — moisture, granulation and ash content.

💧
Moisture
6 – 18%
For optimal pelleting, moisture of 8–12% is required. Higher moisture requires pre-drying.
📐
Granulation
< 5 mm
Wood chips and sawdust must be ground to particles smaller than 5 mm for the pellet die.
🌡️
Ash Content
< 0.7%
Clean wood mass (bark-free) yields pellets with less than 0.5% ash — ENplus A1 class.
🔥
Calorific Value
17–19 MJ/kg
Dry wood has high calorific value, especially hardwood species (beech, oak, hornbeam).

💡 Key advantages

  • Wood pellets achieve ENplus A1 and A2 standard
  • Sawdust does not require expensive preparation
  • Lignin in wood acts as a natural binder — no additives
  • High pellet density (>600 kg/m³)
  • Low ash and sulphur content
  • Easy storage and transport
  • Growing EU market — ENplus certification

Processing technology

From wood residues to finished pellet — every process step is critical to the quality of the final product.

1

Size reduction and crushing

Chips, branches and large wood residues are reduced to fractions smaller than 30–50 mm by crushers, then ground by hammer mills to < 5 mm.

2

Raw material drying

Raw material with moisture above 15% must be dried. Rotary or counter-flow dryers reduce moisture to the optimum 8–12% for pelleting.

3

Pelleting

Ground and dried material passes through the pellet mill die under pressure. Lignin in wood is activated by temperature and holds the pellet without additives.

4

Pellet cooling

Hot pellets (80–90°C) from the pellet mill must be cooled to ambient temperature. Cooling ensures a hard pellet and prevents condensation during storage.

Sieving and packaging

The vibro-sieve separates fine dusty particles and broken pellets from ENplus-quality whole pellets. Packaging into big-bag or bags follows.

What you can produce

From wood residues and sawdust it is possible to produce several types of high-quality fuels.

🔥
ENplus wood pellets

Standardised cylindrical pellets of diameter 6 or 8 mm. Achieve ENplus A1 standard with < 0.7% ash and > 17.5 MJ/kg.

🧱
Wood briquette

Pressed briquette larger than pellets — for stoves, boilers and grills. Longer burn time than pellets.
