Vertical turning on a carousel lathe

We turn heavy parts on a carousel lathe, which has a vertical axis of rotation: the part sits on the rotary table and its own weight holds it steady. The working range is Ø 1,200 × 1,000 mm, for parts weighing up to 2 tonnes. This is how we machine rings, flanges and other heavy parts from forgings, to your drawing.

Why a carousel lathe for heavy parts

Accurate dimensions, even on the largest parts

On a carousel lathe the axis of rotation is vertical, so the part sits on the rotary table instead of hanging in a chuck. Clamping and positioning it this way gives high stability and accuracy, even for parts weighing up to two tonnes.

We make parts that carry heavy loads from forgings, pieces of forged steel, and turn, mill and drill them to size. What this means for you: accurate dimensions and a clean surface, even on the largest and heaviest parts.

FAQ

Questions about vertical turning

How large a part can you machine?

Up to Ø 1,200 mm in diameter and 1,000 mm in height, weighing up to 2 tonnes.

Why a carousel lathe and not a conventional lathe?

With heavy, large-diameter parts, the part sits on the rotary table and is held by its own weight, so clamping is more stable and machining more accurate than when the part hangs in the chuck of a horizontal lathe.

Can you also cut the part before turning?

Yes. We cut blanks from thick steel by waterjet, with no heat input, so they go straight to turning.

Do you make one-off parts?

Yes, we make both one-offs and production runs. We quote the price and lead time based on the drawing and quantity.
